Corrections: how we fix mistakes

In short

Reading the whole page takes about 3 minutes.

  • If we get something wrong, we correct it and say so.
  • Every correction is listed below, with its date and the pages it changed.
  • Mistakes that could affect someone's safety are fixed first.

What counts as a correction

What do you count as a correction?

Any change to a fact, number, source, grade or legal status. Small typos are logged too.
The five kinds of entry in our corrections log.
Kind of entryWhat it meansDoes the page itself show it?
PublicationA version of the site, or a new page, went onlineNo; this is where a page’s record starts
Substantive correctionA fact, number, source, evidence grade or safety statement was wrong, and we changed itYes, with the date
ClarificationThe facts were right, but the words could be misread, so we reworded themYes, with the date
Regulatory updateA law or a regulator’s decision changed after we checked it, and we brought the page up to dateYes, with the date
Minor correctionA typo, a broken link or a layout faultYes, with the date; small fixes may be logged together

We do not change a page quietly when the change matters. A substantive entry says what was wrong, what the page says now, and which source shows it. Each corrected page also shows the date near its title, with a link to this log.

How fast we act

How fast do you fix mistakes?

Safety mistakes first, as soon as we have checked them. Other mistakes within days.
What we do first, and how fast we aim to act, once a mistake is confirmed.
Kind of mistakeExampleWhat we doWe aim to act within
Could affect someone’s safetyA wrong warning sign or a wrong step in an emergencyCorrect the passage, or take it down until it is right; then look for the same mistake on other pagesOne working day
SubstantiveA wrong number, source, status or evidence gradeCorrect and log itSeven days
A law or status changedA regulator decides something newUpdate the page and its “checked on” dateAs soon as we learn of it
MinorA typo or a broken linkFix it; log it with other small fixesThe next update

These times start when we have confirmed the mistake against the original source. Checking can take longer when the source is hard to get.
